A day at the park

MK had a busy few days, but T. Willy is already bored. He wants to be on the go at all times. So today I took him to a nearby park. It has some water features, sprinklers, etc, and I thought he would have a lot of fun with it, because he has gotten really brave in the pool.

However...he wanted nothing to do with the water. He just wanted to play on the slides and monkey bars, and the racecar.

He still had a great time, and was able to get out of the house, which he enjoyed the most. I just liked hanging out with him.

Checking in

MK had her first official babysitting job last night. She has watched T. Willy plenty of times and watched some kids at a party once, but the parents were all in another room. This was the first time she had been at someone else's house watching other people's children alone. The kids are 11 and 8, so didn't need a lot of care, but she was in charge. She had a blast. They were very well behaved and, when the mom called to check in, the daughter said she hoped that they weren't heading home yet. I think that's a good sign. Tonight she is spending the night at a friend's house, so she is aleady having an eventful summer.

Other than that, things are quiet here. I think T. Willy is going to miss school, because he has been drawing and coloring, and wants me to say some of the things his teacher said, "Stay in the lines," etc. He is so funny.

So, that's it for us. Have a great day!

Said by me today

"Why am I yelling at you with 15 minutes left in the school year?" Not my finest moment.

Today was the last day of school. It is so wonderful to have the entire summer ahead of me. I still don't know what the future holds, but right now lots of time with the kids and time in the pool. It was a good day overall. We gathered around the office after the students were dismissed and shared some hugs and a few tears. And that was it. I think it will sink in much later. It was such a fun place to work, and this year was the best out of the seven I spent there.

My mom traveled with some friends from church to New York for the memorial for Baby Jacob. She texted me that they arrived safely. The service is tonight and they will be able to spend some time with the family tomorrow.

That's about it. Have a great night!!

Pray

Many of you may have checked the sidebar and followed the sweet, short life of Baby Jacob. Please pray for this amazing family!

We have talked about the Fahmers in our class and prayed for Baby Jacob. We even took a trip to the office once to see pictures of him. I didn't check his site this weekend, so when we came in this morning, one of the kids asked about him. I told them that I would check when they went to P.E. We prayed for him as we always do. I came to the office just now and saw the news. I will tell them after lunch.

Thinking

We were touched by death twice this weekend. The first was a man who has been a part of my family's life since before I was born. He and his wife were very dear friends of my parents and if I remember correctly the first people to introduce themselves when my parents started attending the church that they still attend. He had battled health problems for quite some time, and was even hospitalized once when I was there, while the doctors were telling us to say goodbye. Incidentally, that was before T. Willy was born. That day I just sat by his bed and held his hand. He and his wife had agreed to "take me in" if something ever happened to my parents. At our wedding, they told the Big Man, "She's yours now," because they took that very seriously. I know that Mrs. V. is mourning today, but rejoicing in the hope of seeing him again.

The second was a friend from church. We weren't close, but she was a presence and always cheerful and friendly. She was also our age. She leaves a husband and three young children. We ate out on Sunday morning and saw her and her family there. She was so weak and in a wheelchair, so her kids were holding doors open. I grabbed the fourth door so I had a chance to say hello. It is quite shocking. She had been ill, but I think we were all hoping she would pull through.

Life is short.

Wrapping up

There are eight school days left in the year. Hooray! I have loved this year, but now that it is winding down, we are all ready for it to end. Today we had "camera day" and took lots and lots of pictures. I am going to post some. I did get permission from parents. I took a picture of myself with each student and plan to print them and then write a letter to each child and attach their pictures. It is amazing how attached I have become to each of these kids.

They journal every morning. I give them a topic and they write about it, then I respond to them. Yesterday the topic was to write about a special memory of the year. Today they were to write about what they will remember most about me. The most popular responses had to do with my, and I quote, "big bushy hair," and my red Liberty hoodie. It is often freezing in my room, so I keep the jacket at school most of the time. Once I exchanged it for another jacket and they revolted. So it was appropriate that I am wearing my jacket and having a "big bushy" hair day.

I am also going to add a picture, albeit squinty, of two of my coworkers and me. These two women have become so dear to me this year. We can talk about anything and share each other's burdens. I am not a woman who has a lot of "girlfriends," but these two qualify.

It was also red day at school to show support for the troops. It wasn't just a big coincidence. Although, I would wear red every day if I could.

So that is a literal snapshot into my life. I will miss this school very much, but am eager to see what lies ahead.

Party pictures

Not much going on. I was going to teach a summer class, but it was cancelled, so I am enjoying the extra time. As soon as my dryer goes off, my laundry will be all caught up, I cleaned out T. Willy's room today and even managed to cook dinner. I think the family is appreciative that the class was cancelled. Only about 3 weeks left of school, and then I'll be officially unemployed, but I plan to really enjoy the summer!

I just thought I'd post a few pictures of the party and then go to bed. I didn't ask any parents for permission to show their kids, so it's just a picture of MK and her smore, her "Hello Kitty" cupcakes and the tents in the morning.

Have a great week!!!

Slumber party...NOT!

When T. Willy was born we set the alarm on our house to chime every time a door opened, so that we would hear him in the event of an escape. I rethought that around 5:00 this morning. I "slept" on the living room sofa just in case they needed anything. Apparently they needed to enter and exit the house a few dozen times. However, I think they had a good time. Some of them actually slept for a few hours. MK and a couple of friends slept on the hammock under the stars for a couple of hours. I am pretty sure she will enjoy a long nap today. They have been swimming already this morning and made their own breakfasts, played Wii and are now playing Rock Band. I am laughing that I had visions of them sleeping in and not having time for breakfast before their parents came to get them. How naive!!! Two girls left last night and two have already left...only 7 to go!!!

Field Day and Slumber Party

Today was the last Field Day at our school. Everything is like that: the last this, the last that. But it was a lot of fun, and if I can figure it out, will post a picture of a coworker and me after we were pelted with water balloons.

My night class ended on Wednesday. All but 2 people passed, and I am so sad about the two that didn't. I loved the class, and have signed up for another one for the summer, but the numbers are light, so I don't know if I will get to do it. It's a different level of English, but should still be fun.

Finally, MK is having a slumber party tonight. The girls are here and wild already. They are playing "Rock Band" right now, so I stole some time away to blog. One girl realized that her boyfriend (yes, they're 13) lives around the corner and has asked no less than 5 times to go to his house, or if we could invite him here. Ugh. I will be keeping an eye on her. We borrowed some tents from some generous friends who even helped by putting them up! Great friends, thank you W & K! We are going to roast hot dogs and make smores...should be fun. I will post pictures tomorrow if I am awake enough to think!

I loooove....

So yesterday T. Willy and I were driving into the parking lot at school. I mentioned to him that we were following Miss Becky, another teacher at school. He said, "I love...I looove....I looooove...." and I was expecting him to say Miss Becky. Instead he said, "I love Mr. Mike's parking space."

Busted again!

That is what I get for using real names in a previous post. You know who you are! I hope you'll write and let me know how you're doing!!!

Fab-u-lous

I have to admit; High School Musical on Ice was very entertaining. We sat on the ice, the most amazing seats I've ever had. The kids loved it...I sat by screaming girls (and boys - don't tell them I know) and they sang and danced and had a blast. But what did they come back to school talking about? In one scene, a character rips off his shirt to change into another. I finally had to ask them to stop talking about it, and still 2 girls wrote about it in their journals yesterday morning. Oh well. They had so much fun and were very well behaved. I have one student who is, we'll say, unpredictable. I sat right behind her to monitor her. No need...she was mesmerized from the second the lights went down until they came up. She didn't move. I have never seen that from her before. Too bad our classroom isn't sponsored by Disney.

The Big Man kept Ty home from school yesterday and took him strawberry picking. He sent pictures throughout the day and texted what they were doing. They had so much fun that T. Willy asked to go to bed at 7:30, when normally he doesn't go till sometime after 8. He was exhausted.

After the show, I had a doctor's appointment that I had been absolutely dreading. I have had a mole on my nose for quite a long time. It wasn't too bothersome, except when I wear glasses I could feel it. I scheduled an appointment about removing it last year and completely "forgot" to go. Anyway, I actually went to the appointment on Wednesday. It was the last appointment of the day, so I figured they would look at it, evaluate and then schedue the removal. Wrong...she removed it right then. It was the most painless procedure I've ever had. I didn't feel the shot, didn't feel the removal and still feel no pain or even tenderness. I can't believe I put it off for so long. It had been there since at least high school, and now it's GONE!

So, that's it for us. Have a great day!!!

Are you green with envy?

Well, maybe not. Tomorrow we are taking a school field trip. We are going to see...High School Musical on Ice! Could I be more excited? The answer to that is, yes, I could be more excited. However, it is a day away from the classroom, so that alone makes it fun. MK is very disappointed that she isn't going. She goes on and on about how much she doesn't like HSM, so I didn't get a ticket for her, but she was hoping for a day off of school. Oh well. She, of course, has seen HSM 1 and 2, she is just at the age where it isn't cool to say so.

Speaking of MK, her birthday is Monday. She will be 13. I am amazed every time I think about it. She has declared the month of May "Maddiepalooza." There will be no living with her.

No news on the job front for next year. I applied at another Christian school in town. There is a preschool there, so T. Willy and I took a tour of it yesterday. He seemed very comfortable and even asked to go outside where the kids were playing. I think he'll be just fine.

That's about it. Have a great day!!!

Happy Birthday, T. Willy!

Thursday was T. Willy's 4th birthday. We had his birthday party today. It was very simple and a lot of fun. We made new friends and caught up with old ones. Here is just a sampling of pictures.

Summer is on the way

The 7 dollar dress

I dream perchance to sleep

Saturday. I look forward to Saturday all week. Saturday brings the promise of sleep. During the week I stay up too late and get up too early, and I sacrifice a lot of sleep. But Saturday...that is the day that we have no morning obligations. On Friday nights we keep T. Willy up a little late, so that he will sleep in. That is what we did last night, and it worked. T. Willy slept until 8:30 this morning. I, however, was up and ready to go at 6:16. This is later than I usually sleep, but I really wanted to lounge in bed. I got up, checked email and started thinking.

I had been hoping to be hired by the county school district for the next school year. That is becoming very unlikely. They are starting layoffs right now; there is little chance that they will need me. So I started thinking about what else I might be able to do. Hence, my early morning was not wasted. I filled out job applications and transcript request forms, and we'll just have to wait to see if anything comes of it.

Last night the Big Man watched hockey, and the kids were occupied, so I went shopping all alone. It wasn't for long, but it was nice to just get away for something fun. I was debating between 2 dresses. They were similar, and I was leaning toward one, then I looked at the price tags...I chose the one I wasn't leaning toward, because it was marked down to $6.99. I couldn't believe my eyes. I took it to the clerk and asked if I was reading it right. She couldn't believe it either, but said it was correct. I reached in my pocket and paid cash for it. I cannot tell you when, if ever, that has ever happened. I am just hoping there isn't some enormous flaw in it, and that it won't completely fall apart when I wear it.

True story

We live near an Air Force base, and I am fortunate to have several airmen in my night class. Tonight our topic was improving writing through the use of strong verbs and adjectives. We talked about checking for overused words while editing. I gave an example of reading a first grader's writing. It might read, "This was a good day. I had a good time. My mom is good..." etc, and using the word 'good' so many times because it's a word they know how to spell with confidence. One of the airmen, let's call him George (really not his name) raised his hand. With a confused look on his face, he asked..."Do first graders know how to talk?" The moms in the class pounced on him. He was so embarrassed, but admitted there are no children in his life. It was a running joke all night. Poor guy...poor uninformed and now blogged about George.

Have a good night!

That was quick

And now it is just the weekend...our break is over. We stayed close to home, but accomplished a few things and had a good time. I enjoy my job, so I'm not sorry to go back, but it was very nice to be home too. On the last Friday before the break, we had parent/teacher conferences. I had been worried about one specifically...and without going into particulars, I've had some serious concerns about this student. The mother was so great and we are going to try a new course of action. I am really looking forward to getting that started. We only have a month left in my night class. I have enjoyed it immensely, but it has taken a toll on all of us. We are getting down to the wire, and I just hope I have prepared them appropriately for their exit exam.

Tonight we colored Maddie's hair again. We just did the tips...pink again. I promised last time, um, around New Year's to post a picture, but this time I really may do it.

Have a great day!

Spring Break

We are midway into our Spring Break. We haven't done a whole lot, but it's nice to have the break from school. MK had a friend spend the night last night. They stayed up late and made pancakes for breakfast...pretty much the way a sleepover should be.

Last night we met the wife of one of the Big Man's coworkers. They have lived here for a few months, but haven't met a lot of people. They have a little boy T. Willy's age, and the boys got along famously. We met at our local Burger King..neutral ground with an indoor playground. It was a nice change. I don't have a lot of "girl" friends. The Big Man's schedule makes it difficult to coordinate things, and my schedule this semester hasn't helped. We used to have a core group of friends, but they have all moved away, and we have just been too lazy to meet anyone else. She was great and easy to talk to, so we'll see what develops.

Our plans for next year are still up in the air. I have applied with our county, but I really don't know if anything will happen there, so I am looking into some other things. Florida offers VPK (voluntary pre kindergarten) so we are going on Monday to register T. It is available to all 4 year olds and takes place in the schools, however, I don't think it is offered at the school where T. will actually go for elementary. I guess we'll just have to find out on Monday.

So, that's what is happening for us. I hope you are enjoying your spring!

Bonding

MK and the Big Man are taking a road trip tomorrow night. They are going to meet the Big Man's brother and family and some other friends in Mobile, AL to see their favorite comedian, Brian Regan. T. Willy and I are going to stay home and rest. Spring Break starts tomorrow after parent/teacher conferences.

Good night!

Go here now! Hurry!

HERE

Happy Easter!

Still having computer issues, but figured out how to get pictures from my cell phone. So here is one of me and another of T. Willy at his class Easter Egg Hunt...cheesy smile and all! I will try to get a picture of MK's outfit soon. I had one, but erased it too soon.

A Rose by any other Name - for you, "Miss Massi"

As you may know, I recently because reacquainted with my former English teacher. After learning my daughter's name, Madeline, she asked if I named her after the children's book character of the same name. (The official answer is no, but we have collected A LOT of paraphernalia over the years.) I am always interested in how people choose their children's names, so please bear with me as I share our story.

Our first child is Madeline Kay. Although I adore the Madeline books, we chose the name for a different reason. We (I) just liked it. In the dark ages, meaning before the internet, my mother in law used to collect interesting articles and mail them to us. One such article was about a teacher in a very small town who had three sets of twins in her class. One of the twins was named Madeline, and I liked it, mentioned it to the Big Man, and kept it in my mind for several years. When we finally became pregnant, I never considered another girl's name. Her middle name was easy too. My mother, the Big Man's mother, AND my father, all have the middle name Kay, and I really liked the idea of naming her after them. In the hospital room, after she had been born, and it was time to fill out the birth certificate, the Big Man asked me if I was sure that her name would be Madeline. I remember eyeing him with a look that said, have you not been listening to me for all this time? He did not question me, and Madeline Kay it was.

T. Willy, Ty William, was our surprise baby. We had undergone some fertility treatments while trying to become parents. After we had MK, we were so happy and content with her and did not even discuss trying fertility treatments again. Of course, the desire for another child was always present, but it was not a priority. Forward nine years later, and surprise, we're going to have a baby! We had a girl's name picked out (Lauren Elizabeth) but were stuck for a boy's name. We finally agreed on Ty, once again, just because we liked it, and, no, not because we were Trading Spaces fans. His middle name came from the Big Man's dad, so all four grandparents were covered.

And we have two. As much as the desire was there for a second child, as soon as we had him, the realization was just as strong that our family was complete. And it is. So please, share with me the stories of how you chose your children's names!!!

Don't nag

I did have pictures to post, but am having computer issues. So sorry.

All is well here. We are having a great time with my parents. Today T. Willy stayed home with my dad, while the Big Man worked and my mom and I took MK to the mall to buy Easter clothes. Her Easter outfit is not traditional in any way, but it suits her and unlike the dress she first picked out, may actually be worn again. I also got a dress which is lovely, so maybe you'll see pictures, but who knows?

The biggest treat tonight, though? MK was given an early birthday present, since my parents aren't able to be in town for her birthday. ROCK BAND!!! I couldn't believe it. I was more excited than MK. As you may recall, we played it last week at her friend's party. We were instantly hooked. And it hasn't changed. My mom and T. Willy played, but MK and I outlasted them. Finally we just had to turn it off so MK could get some sleep.

No joke...I saw this today: While in the yard at my in-law's house, the Easter Bunny walked down the hill and into a neighboring house. Okay, it was a guy dressed as the Easter Bunny with the head under his arms...anyway...the car he was exiting was a Volkswagen RABBIT. That just cracked me up. It still does, which means it's late and I should go. Good night and Happy Easter!

Our Town

So I live in a small town in the Florida Panhandle. It has many unique qualities. But one of the things that I find most interesting is our Burger King. We have 2 Burger Kings. One is a shiny new restaurant with an indoor playground. The other is (was) not. Its distinguishing feature? A drive-thru accessible only by the passenger door side or a serious reach from the driver's side. And now it is no more. Here is an article about it.

Burger King

Sweet dreams!!!

Happenings

I have not posted pictures in a very long time. Tonight will be no different, but I am working on some. My parents safely arrived in town this evening, and will undoubtedly give us reasons for some photo ops.

MK thoroughly enjoyed her friend's surprise birthday party last night. The Big Man was working, so T. Willy and I stayed with her for the whole thing. It was a blast. They have "Rock Band" which is Guitar Hero times 4. The kids had so much fun with it, and the adults even took some turns. They also had a Wii set up in a different area, so between the wonderfully patient dog and the Wii, T. Willy had a ball too!

And off to bed I go! Have a great night, and if I don't post pictures sometime this week, nag me! But not yet.

Friday night

Lots to do this weekend. My parents are coming here Sunday night. I haven't seen them since Christmas so I cannot wait until they arrive! It is warm here and I'd like to do some yardwork. T. Willy helped me pick out some flowers today. He had a ball, so that was inspiration to do more.

All is well at school. Everyone is adjusting to the news and just kind of thinking about the future. We are dealing with the news with a sense of humor. Unfortunately, there is also a lot of sarcasm. The kids are abuzz with news of what they are going to do next year. I have filled out a few recommendations for other schools. We're all going to be okay.

MK had the big state exams at school this week, and she is relieved to have it behind her. She is looking forward to her first surprise birthday party tomorrow. The plans are for a big night of "Rock Band." She hasn't played it before, but loves "Guitar Hero" so I think she'll like it.

And now a word from T. Willy. A few mornings ago, the Big Man got up early with us and fed T. Willy breakfast. I was getting ready, packing lunches, etc., and they were talking and laughing and having a big time. As we were on our way to school, I mentioned to T. how nice it was of his dad to get up with him. He said, "Yes, I love him...but I don't like his hair."

This week

So a few things happened this week.

The first involves work. We were called into a meeting last week. It was at 5:30 on a Friday evening to ensure that everyone was able to make it. Our principal prayed and immediately said, "Well, folks, we're closing." I cannot describe the feeling. Of course, the speculation had begun after we were told about the meeting. We were prepared for something big, but not exactly what it was. I work at a Christian school that is privately run, in that it is run by a family and not in conjunction with a church as many are. From what we've been told, the family just believes that it is time. Now it seems that when things happen, there is a general feeling of...that is the last time that will happen. I worked there for six years, took 3 years off while I stayed home with T. Willy and returned at the beginning of this school year. The people there have been very good to me and the school has been a part of my life for 10 years now.

We had our annual student vs. staff basketball game yesterday. I sat with the principal's wife. When he took the court, the students were yelling like crazy for him. She and I sat there and teared up, knowing that this would be the last time that would happen. There is a lot of that. The Big Man often calls it the school for misfit students. While that isn't the nicest assessment, it has an element of truth. Many of our kids have struggled in public school and have found a haven at our school. We wonder what will happen to them next year.

I had actually been planning to submit an application with our county school district. I have even arranged to take the state certification test in April. I just wanted this year to help T. Willy in his first year of preschool. He is just a few feet from me and I love it. He had a very bad week last week due to illness, and I cannot express how wonderful it was to be able to run to his class and comfort him and then be able to radio his teacher to see how he was. I will always be thankful for this year. I was hestitating to submit the application because I wanted a reference but did not want to seem disloyal. At least that has been resolved for me. So we will just have to wait and see what the future holds.

The next also involves school but in a different way. In my night class this week I quoted a teacher that I had in 7th and 9th grades. She was my English teacher, always my favorite subject, and she really made a positive impression on me. After the class I came home and decided to search for her on the internet. Voila! So if you saw the comments on my last post, you will know that I found her.

The experiences that I had in school were very different from those of the Big Man. He went to a huge public school and had no real relationships with his teachers. My school was a good size for a Christian school, but there were still only 42 in my graduating class. It was connected to our church in which we were very active. Because of school and church activities, it was not unusual for me to be there 7 days week. And I absolutely loved it. I am still in touch with many people from school, and while it wasn't perfect, I am thankful for it. And I am thankful for "Miss Massi" writing back to me!!!

Back in the land of the living

We are pretty much all well again. The Big Man is recovering and is back at work. The kids and I are okay, and we're all just hoping illness is behind us.

Not much to report. My parents are making plans to come here in a couple of weeks. That should be fun. We haven't seen them since Christmas, and T. Willy always has some new tricks to show them. Today's trick? He has figured out that if he licks his hand and lays it on the freezer shelf, it sticks! Don't ask me how he learned it, I'm just hoping he doesn't figure out that his tongue will do it too!

Have a great day!

Greetings from the infirmary!

We have had a quiet weekend. The Big Man had minor surgery on Friday. I had planned to take the morning off, get him settled in, and then go to work so he could rest. Unfortunately MK started running a fever on Thursday, so I took the whole day off and nursed the family. After naptime the school called and said that T. Willy had gotten sick at school. So I nursed them all Friday night. T. Willy started running a fever last night, just as MK's broke. She is well today but T. Willy and I are both sick. My voice was completely gone for half of the day, so we'll see what tomorrow has to hold. It's a little inconvenient to try to teach without a voice. T. Willy slept nearly all day, which was scary because he doesn't even nap at home, but he's up and playing now.

So now I'm off to watch the Oscars, although I don't think I saw a single nominated movie. But I did get to see Amy Adams on the red carpet, the star of Enchanted, my favorite movie of the year!

Time to Blog Again

Nothing really new to report. We're all doing fine. We're not big observers of the Valentine's holiday, but we had a fun night. The kids got presents and I actually cooked dinner. With our hectic schedules of late, that is really a big deal! I defrost and serve food, but that night I actually cut and peeled and seasoned, etc.

On Wednesday the head of the English department sat in on my class. Wow...I was NERVOUS! I was shaking and stumbling over my words. Then we did something out of the ordinary that broke the ice. We were concentrating on writing that night. (Me teaching writing...it's almost laughable.) The assignment was to observe something and then write about it, using the things we've been learning to describe it. So we left the classroom and went to the library. It was everyone's, including my, first time to the campus library. As we walked there, Mrs. H. said she thought it was a good idea, so that really helped. One of the students also said she was nervous. She mentioned that the class was so serious. When we returned to the room, I was much more relaxed, especially when I saw Mrs. H. grading papers. She sat with me after the class and gave me some helpful, but not critical, words of advice, all of which were extremely valuable. She hired me and I really wanted her to feel that she had made a good decision.

So, that's it. Hope you have a great day!

Link update

I have updated my links, so I thought I would tell you about the people whose sites I enjoy.

The first is the newspaper from Delaware. No big deal to you, but it keeps me up to date on things happening in my home state.

Melissa was my roommate in college. While I am kind of a factual, here's how it happened blogger, she has the ability to turn the facts into warm and funny stories.

Fellowship Bible Church is a wonderful church near New Orleans. I mean that, even though my father in law is the pastor and I may be a bit biased.

Aaron's blog belongs to my brother. He is a talented photographer and I look forward to more posts and pictures from him (not so subtle hint.)

Chel is a friend I know just on the internet. She updates frequently with pictures of her beautiful family in Arizona, and always has something encouraging to say.

Noelle and I have been friends since elementary school. She and I have been through A LOT and it's good to have her blogging about her life near Baltimore.

Emily is Melissa's youngest sister. She has three wonderful boys and another baby on the way. She also has Melissa's ability to turn everyday happenings into something fun and special.

The Pioneer Woman lives the life that I once thought I wanted. She lives with her family on a ranch in, apparently, the middle of nowhere. However, she has a lot to say. Also, check out her cooking section, complete with step by step photos. The pictures alone will keep you going back to her site again and again.

I "cyber" met Dy via Melissa. However, I also met her and her four lovely children in real life when they were visiting our area. Check out the pictures of the changes that they have made to their "Forever Home."

The Fahmer's are people that I've met in real life, but they are really friends of my parents. They used to work at my parents' church. They recently had a beautiful baby boy named Jacob. Please take time to read about this special little boy and how the family is handling the challenges they are facing.

So, that's the update.

Wii!!!

We were graciously gifted with a Wii game system this week. It is so fun! We are all playing it together and having so much fun. MK is the best at tennis. The Big Man is the best at bowling. I am not the best at anything but enjoy it very much. T. Willy likes to watch but he hasn't played very much.

Things are going well here. My dual teaching schedule is keeping me very busy, but I am really enjoying it. I love the college class. They don't say much at all, but are starting to warm up. It's a diverse group. Their ages range from fresh out of high school to, I would guess, late 40's. They are there for all reasons...to learn to speak English, to learn enough to continue in college, and to go back to college to start over in new careers. It's a learning experience for me, as well. I have no idea if this will turn into anything full time...but it may look good on a resume.

That's about it for us. Have a great weekend!

What's his name? Erik, the Big Man

How long have you been together? 20 years next month

How long did you date? I'm not sure we ever had an official date. We were friends... then we were more...then we were married.

How old is he? 39

Who eats more? That's tough. He might eat more at meals but I snack more.

Who said I love you first? He did.

Who is taller? He is.

Who is smarter? He is. Hands down. I know more trivial facts, but he has much better discerning skills in almost every area.

Who does laundry? I do. He is perfectly capable, but I do it.

Who does the dishes? Most of the time, I do. But, he helps out a LOT.

Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? He does.

Who pays the bills? He does. But we just had the conversation tonight that if something were to happen to him, I don't remember any of the necessary passwords to do that. So we are going to work on sharing it.

Who mows the lawn? He does...99.99% of the time. I help out, but it's not really a chore because we have a riding mower.

Who cooks dinner? I usually do. He works in a restaurant, and is a good cook, but once he comes home, that is not what he wants to do.

Who drives when you are together? He does. I don't like to drive, and am not a particularly good driver, so I gladly relinquish driving duties to him. He is a great driver.

Who is more stubborn? It completely depends on the situation.

Who kissed who first? That was completely mutual.

Who asked out who first? See above...wasn't a traditional dating situation.

Who proposed? Once again, non-traditional...that is who we are. It was just more or less agreed upon.

Who has more siblings? We each have one brother.

Who wears the pants in the family? It's a partnership, but if we come to an impasse, I would defer to him...it just hasn't happened yet.

Thanks to Chel for the tag. If you choose to join in, please let me know!!!

Goings on

It seems that we are constantly busy, but I cannot think of what we are doing. We just enjoyed a four day weekend. I had to work a half day Friday, but was home by 11:30. We took T. Willy to a birthday party. He didn't mind at all that he was the only boy there. One of the girls was in his preschool class. She ran up to him and gave him a hug, but he kind of just stood there. Even at his age, the boys don't seem to hug each other much. Speaking of his age...we have been talking about his fourth birthday coming up in April. I asked him if he was excited about turning four. His answer! "Um, I think I'll just stay three."

Back to school today. The kids were wild. It felt like a Friday. I work at a Christian school where they have to wear uniforms. On Fridays they are permitted to wear jeans with their uniform shirt. They just know that they aren't in uniform and act very differently. Report cards went out today. I gave the worst report card I have ever given. One student had 2 F's and a D. I also had to write negative comments about the lack of effort on his behalf...the complete and total lack of effort. For instance...one test grade...a 19% on an OPEN BOOK TEST!!!!! Frustrating, yet I can't help but feel bad about it.

So, that's a little update from our house. Have a great day!!!

First class

Tonight was my first class. Once I arrived, I think it went really well. However, getting there often proves challenging for me. For weeks I have known where I was going. I had no hesitation because I knew where it was. I drove there tonight and it was not where I thought it was. We call these my "bubbles" moments. Actually, the first place I went was where the Big Man thought it was too. After asking questions, I found the correct place and it was smooth sailing from there. I left the house very early...who knew how much I needed that extra time?

The class was very quiet. For some it was their very first college class, for others it was their first in years. We did introductions, business and a get to know you activity that was also a diagnostic writing assignment. Thanks to all of you who wished me well and prayed for me tonight. I'll try to update more as it goes along.

Have a great night!

Welcome, January!

I cannot tell you how happy I am that Christmas is over, cleaned up, and put away. For some reason I just did not enjoy Christmas this year. Perhaps it was because I had a late start decorating and shopping. I resolve to do better next year..let's see how it goes.

We are home now. We had a lovely trip to Delaware. We visited with family and friends and had a wonderful time. Now we are home and went back to school today. It was not a difficult transition. The students were so excited to be back. I have a meeting at the college on Friday afternoon. I cannot believe that class begins Monday! It's a busy time for us, but an exciting one too.

MK has been asking for quite a while to color her hair.....PINK! On our last night in Delaware, we put a bit of pink in the front and then did some on the longest layer in the back (my favorite.) It looks really good, but we were a little concerned about what they would say at school. She was worried because she has never been in trouble at school before, but we assured her that she wouldn't be in trouble at home. She made it through the whole day and her last period teacher said that she should probably change it.The principal was out today, so she suggested we do it before the principal returns. That is what we did tonight. It didn't come out completely but has settled to a subtle shade of maroon. We are leaving the pink in the back. I will post pictures soon.

So that's it for us. Have a great day!

Welcome, 2008!

2007 is ending with a bang (What was that noise outside? It sent children running from all parts of the house.) I suppose New Year's revelers were beginning early. Anyway, I am still in Delaware and celebrating New Year's Eve with my family, minus the Big Man. He and I have been in touch tonight, and he is in Central Time, so we actually get to celebrate twice. This has become a tradition.

I am looking forward to new things in 2008 but also thankful for the things that I have learned in 2007. I finished school (sorry, I did try not to mention it again,) and that was a big personal deal for me. The kids and the Big Man are healthy and happy, and I have had great times with wonderful family and friends. I am blessed!

So, I hope that 2008 is wonderful for you. I wish you all health and happiness...wow, sappy...I just wish the best for all of you!

P.S. I would also like world peace.

First State News

Okay, there is no news to share, I just like to remind you of where I am.

After some delays at the airport yesterday, we arrived last night safe and sound. My parents met us at the airport and my brother and his kids surprised us at my parents' house. We talked and laughed until too late. Then my very dear friend called this morning and took me out. We went to the mall, which was a frequent hangout when we were kids, and went to lunch. She has moved since the last time I was home, so we stopped by her beautiful new home. After she dropped me off, I had just enough time to play with the kids and then my wonderful brother and I took off.

We went to see my niece play basketball in Valley Forge, then we went into Philadelphia. We ate cheesesteaks, because we were in Philly and that's a must, then we walked around a little bit. We saw Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, from a distance at least, because it was nighttime. Then he took me to hear some music. It was wonderful! He always plans fun things for me. Wow! I know I should be tired, but I am not at all. Plus, the sleeping arrangements are different than they were last night, because another nephew is here, so T. Willy is currently sprawled across the bed where I slept last night. I guess I'll go and see what I can do about that.

Have a great night!

Traditions - or skip this unless you are really bored

We have several Christmas traditions in our family. So today I thought I would share them with you.

We do not look at Christmas lights until Christmas Eve. So on Christmas Eve, we piled into the Durango and drove around to look at lights. One neighborhood is built around a lake, and they set up Christmas trees in the lake, so we make a point of going there. Then we just choose a few others at random. One thing we noticed this year is that a lot of people did not do lights, ourselves included. I really did try to get out there and set them up, I just didn't. What was it about this year? Anyway, we still enjoyed ourselves, it was just a bit different.

After we look at lights we come home and eat. Our tradition is to eat a meal of appetizers/finger foods. For the kids, it's taquitos and mini-corn dogs, and for the grown ups it's usually spinach/artichoke dip and shrimp. We changed it up this year. We had crabcakes and bacon wrapped steak. We also had a vegetable tray, but I'm pretty sure the ranch dip negated any value the vegetables offered.

After dinner the kids open one present. For T. Willy it was a Thomas train, his first and just the start of his "very Thomas Christmas." He was delighted. MK opened a DVD so that she could watch it while she was trying to sleep.

We then put the cookies and milk out for Santa, with celery for the reindeer. We use the same plate and mug every year. This was a big thing this year. MK really took the lead in a lot of things for T. Willy. This is the first year he really "got" a lot of it, and she loved helping him. We read the Christmas story from Luke 2, because we don't want them to lose sight of the real meaning of Christmas, then off to bed.

We eat the same thing for our Christmas breakfast, but this year we added hashbrown casserole. It's nice that the Big Man works in a restaurant and is able to purchase things like that. We also had mac and cheese with our ham, all from his restaurant!!!

One tradition started when the Big Man and I lived in Virginia and were still in college. We have never lived near our parents and brothers, so we often have quiet Christmases. After the presents are opened, there isn't a lot to do. So we head to the movies. If you don't do that, you would be amazed at how many people do! The theater was packed! We are quite thankful for the ability to buy tickets online. However, we haven't done that since 2003, because T. Willy wasn't able to sit through a movie. And this year he was! It was so much fun!

Our last tradition is a trip to Delaware for the kids and me. We are flying out tomorrow, so there is much to do today. We have a stop in Cincinnati on the way up, instead of Atlanta. We won't really see the city, but MK is excited to go to a new state.

So there are our Christmas traditions. I will include some pictures of yesterday. MK loves music in a way I never did. She loves being in the band at school, she listens to music all of the time, and her heart's desire this year was for a bass guitar. She was thrilled to get it, so here is a picture of it. T. Willy also got a wagon, which he immediately climbed into.

What the hail?

We awoke to the sound of rain this morning. Then while we were opening presents we heard something unusual. We've lived here for 10 years and today was the first day we have had HAIL! It was so pretty falling and, if you used your imagination, it looked a little like snow. I haven't seen it snow in 9 years or so, so I was a little excited about it. It has already melted, but was fun to watch while it lasted. So here are some pictures of our backyard. I especially like the one of the sliding board...because it kind of looks like snow piled up.

Merry Christmas!!!

Here are our Christmas tree and fireplace on Christmas Eve after the kids had gone to bed. I always take these pictures, the last few before the chaos and confusion.

TMI

I have attempted to keep things relatively private on this site...rarely use real names, always say "our little town" instead of giving specifics etc. But today I just had something to share.

MK was given an assignment in English class to write an essay about someone that she respected, an older person important in her life. She chose to write about the Big Man's dad, a worthy choice. The "elders" were then invited to school yesterday where they were given a reception and presented with the essays. Some reporters from our small town were there and she and "Pap" made the newspaper. So here is a link to the article. We bought a few copies of the paper for both sets of grandparents. The paper version has a picture of her and Pap together. Way to go, MK!

Ty's Rainbow

Sweet Treats

Today MK had some friends over to make some Christmas treats. We made candy and cookies and had a really nice time. The girls were very helpful and brightened up a dreary day. It rained quite a bit but we were rewarded with the most beautiful rainbow at the end. T. Willy called it his rainbow and was thrilled with it. So here are some pictures of our day!

Hello!

I am welcoming my wonderful brother into the blogging world. You can find him here. He is an excellent photographer and is planning to post pictures more than writing. I cannot wait!!

Parade Night

We enjoyed another parade tonight. It was very long, but we stayed until Santa brought it home. MK had fun marching, and T. Willy had a great time catching a bag full of candy and hanging out with his dad. I just enjoyed watching it and seeing lots of friends. There were more floats and more spectators than I can remember, but it was a lot of fun.

Here are a few pictures. I enjoyed more than I photographed, but it's a sampling. There is one of T. Willy and the Big Man while we were waiting for the parade to begin. Then there is one of MK with a friend of hers after they finished marching. The last one is of 2 of MK's friends with their scout troup.

So the holiday season has officially begun for us! Merry Christmas!

Just checking in

Not much is going on right now. Our little town is having yet another parade this weekend. This one will kick off the holiday season. MK will walk in it with her school band, and we will cheer for her from the sidelines. The Christmas parade draws a huge crowd and we enjoy seeing many friends.

MK wants to have a Christmas party this year. Any ideas? Last year we had a Halloween party and we gathered the girls around the firepit and made smores which was a big hit. However, it is likely to be too cool for that, so we are looking for some activities. This is a hard age...too old for traditional party games and too young (thank goodness) for boys!

Other than that, the adjustment back to school after the break was painless, and we are fully ready to welcome in the holidays!

Have a great day!

My Guitar Heroes

Sentimental thoughts...at least as sentimental as I get

Thankgiving is my favorite holiday, hands down. I love the food, the family and the football. However, I am reminded of the many things in my life that I have to be thankful for:

My refrigerator is so bursting with food that I don't have room for everything.

I am tired because I have spent a lot of time talking with friends and family.

My cheeks are sore right now because I laughed today harder than I can remember laughing in a long time.

I can't go to sleep yet because MK and her cousin are playing Guitar Hero and I can hear them laughing.

T. Willy and the Big Man are safely tucked in their beds (although the Big Man is probably dreaming of work instead of thinking turkey and football because he has to be at work at 4 a.m. However, he is off on Friday, so he can rest then.)

Our families out of town are healthy (except for colds) and happy and able to enjoy their Thanksgivings.

Just a snippet of the many, many things that I am thankful for. I hope you have as many or more!

Happy Thankgiving!

So...

We watched the movie "Wild Hogs" tonight. This is not a review of the movie. At the beginning of the movie they showed different characters' points of view and labeled each snippet with their name. One of the characters was named Doug. We were all quietly sitting on the sofa watching it when the name, Doug, appeared on the screen. T. Willy looked up and as clear as day said, "Doug." We all looked at each other and just laughed. He loves letters and numbers, borderline obsesses on them, but we had no idea that he knew "Doug." He knows dog, but did not say dog. We are amazed by this boy everyday.

Something new

While I was at school today I received a voicemail from the woman at a nearby college with whom I had an interview sometime back about a job there (it's an English class, but I hope she isn't reading this, because I would honestly have no idea how to diagram that poorly constructed sentence.) I was not able to take the job before because my transcripts did not arrive in time to show proof of my newest degree. Well, she called today to offer me the same opportunity and I accepted. I am going to talk to her on Monday. It is just to teach one class, but if I hadn't been currently employed, she had other classes to offer. This one will be at night so it won't interfere with my current job, but I am really looking forward to it. It will mean 2 nights a week next semester, but the family is supportive, so we'll see how it goes!

Good guess

MK was an 80's girl for Halloween. She did mention that she should have been Madonna, but decided it was just an 80's girl. I'm really glad Chel and Em were able to figure it out. She argued quite a bit with me about the costume, apparently I had no idea what was "authentic" 80's. It took a bit of convincing that I really did have an idea about it. Her biggest complaint? The hair was too big...she really didn't understand the 80's, did she?

My parents are here right now. We are having a great visit. The kids are enjoying them and even spent the night with them so that the Big Man and I could go out to dinner. He had to work early Saturday morning, so I was able to actually sleep in until I woke up on my own! I can't remember the last time that happened.

MK walked in our town's Veteran's Day parade with her school band on Saturday. I was happy that my parents got to see a parade in our town, because for such a small town, parades are really a big deal! T. Willy loves them because we always end up with a bag full of candy that they throw from the floats. It is always a good time to see lots of friends that we don't get to see often.

So that's what's going on with us! Have a great day, and Happy Veteran's Day to all vets out there!!! Thank you so much!!!

Trick or Treat

Here are some pictures of our evening. T. Willy was Elmo, not creative but easy and it was what he wanted. MK's costume took a bit of thought, but people guessed it. Can you?

MK in middle and friends gathered at our house. T. Willy was afraid of the one on the right, so she had to take her mask off to show him it was his old friend, M.

This is T. Willy and his buddy, D. They have been friends since D's mom and I used to walk them in their strollers as infants, but since school started, they don't get to see each other much. So they were very happy to trick or treat together, and very glad that D's dad brought a wagon!

Now we have more candy than we will ever need, but it was a fun night!!!

Family portraits

I wrote about our trip to New Orleans a few weeks ago for the celebration for my father in law. While we were there, they took some pictures of our families, so I am posting a couple of them.

Football is over and we are enjoying some quiet time. Trick or treating tomorrow...I'll be sure to post pictures of that too! Good night!

10/25, October 25th, the 25th day of October

It just has a ring to it, doesn't it? It's my birthday, I'm sure that's why I think so. We didn't have a huge celebration but it was still a fun day, not to mention the most beautiful day of the year so far. It is finally fall! I took my class to the Big Man's restaurant for a field trip. They graciously served us breakfast and we were able to tour the restaurant. The kids loved it! They couldn't stop talking about it, but their favorite part was the walk-in freezer. It was 8 below zero and the kids thought it was the greatest thing. They were less thrilled when we went back to school and actually had to work, but we managed to accomplish a few things.

Back to the restaurant for dinner, since the Big Man was working and it was the only time we were able to be together as a family today. He surprised me with a huge dessert and the servers singing Happy Birthday. I know it's supposed to embarrass me, but I get a kick out of it.

Now it's home to clean, clean, clean! Thanks for reading, and I hope you'll let me know when it's your birthday!

Going against my instincts!

A few months ago, I wrote about two experiences that had bothered me as a teen. I used REAL names, which totally goes against blogging etiquette, and I truly knew better. Busted! I have used some of my abilities to deduce, and I think one of those persons is reading this blog! So, you know who you are, and I hope you aren't upset with me. If it is you, please drop me a line and let me know how you're doing!!!

And now it's Saturday afternoon

We are in New Orleans now. We had a good and uneventful trip. T. Willy sang the Alphabet song no fewer than 32 times and Jesus Loves Me nearly as many. But he occupied himself and that was great. MK napped and listened to music and I read a book that I'm enjoying but can never seem to find time to read.

The Big Man and his mom took T. Willy and MK to do some things which left me some free time. I did some exploring which is unusual for me, because I don't know my way around here that well. MK needed some reeds for her clarinet so I found my way to a music store. I did some more shopping but lines were long and I didn't find anything that I just couldn't live without.

We are going to the Big Man's brother's house for dinner, and we are looking forward to that. I am going to rest and finish watching the LSU game. Go Tigers!

Have a great day!

Our weekend

We are leaving Saturday morning for New Orleans to visit the Big Man's family. My father-in-law is a pastor and has been at his church for 25 years. That is pretty remarkable and we are going to celebrate with the family. We are looking forward to a fun, although quick, trip.

All is going well for us. MK and T. Willy continue to enjoy school. MK has only 2 football games left. Tomorrow night is close to the beach and that is always a fun trip. After that they play their rival team (there are two middle schools in our town - it's the other one) and that is always fun because so many of the kids know each other. Friday afternoon is the high school's Homecoming parade (only one high school in town so the kids all end back up together) and MK will march in it with the band. She has been in the parade before, but this is much more official.

T. Willy is opening up so much. He talks non-stop and often in complete sentences, which is new for him. He loves school and his new friends.

My parents just returned from a trip to Las Vegas. My dad enjoyed some softball games and won a few, although not the tournament, and I think my mom enjoyed just seeing something different. They didn't do any typical Vegas things, but they did some sightseeing and enjoyed it very much.

So there's an update from us. Have a great weekend!

MK speaks

This morning Mk and I were walking out to her school bus and talking. I asked her if she had remembered to bring something we had talked about. I was reminded of the Boy Scout motto, "Be prepared," and mentioned it to her. Since she is a Girl Scout, I asked what the Girl Scout motto is. Her answer? "Be really prepared."

Have a nice day!
